Junk We Haul Most in Halls Crossroads

Halls Crossroads, which everybody just calls Halls, is about 9 or 10 miles north of downtown Knoxville, where Emory Road meets Maynardville Pike. Old family land sits right next to post-war houses and newer subdivisions on the slopes. A lot of our Halls work starts downstairs. Beaver Creek runs through the middle of the valley, and creek-side lower levels get musty fast. Boxes first, then the couch.

  • Musty basements near Beaver Creek: soggy boxes, swollen dressers and carpet that smells
  • Cedar chests, hutches and iron beds handed down a generation (furniture removal)
  • Whole-house cleanouts when a long-held home changes hands
  • Tube TVs and old computers that need the right drop-off
  • Spare-room mattresses and box springs carried down from upstairs (mattress removal)

Donating at the Halls Convenience Center

The Halls Convenience Center at 3608 Neal Drive is one of only three attended donation centers in Knox County, meaning a staffed area for things that still have life in them. Staff there take clothing, furniture, toys, kitchen appliances and tools in good shape, and the center recycles electronics and carpet as well. It's free for Knox County residents, open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 to 6 and Saturday from 7 to 3.

With a car, two bags of clothes and one good lamp, drive it over yourself. That's the cheapest way to do it. A china cabinet and a sleeper sofa are a different story, because you still load and unload them, and the trash side allows only one level pickup load a day. We'll make the donation run for you instead. Keep, give, scrap, toss: good pieces go to KARM Stores or the ReStore, metal to scrap, and only the rest to the landfill. If Halls is busy, the Tazewell Pike center at 7201 Tazewell Pike is the other close option.

Types of Junk Removal We Offer in Halls

In Halls, most jobs start at the bottom of the basement stairs. Here's what we haul up there, in roughly the order it turns up.

Basement Cleanouts Near Beaver Creek

Beaver Creek runs about 25 miles through the valley to the Clinch River, and the homes near it fight damp lower levels. Add about 52 inches of rain a year and humidity around 71.5%, and stored cardboard goes soft, particle-board furniture swells and carpet starts to smell. We bag the wet stuff, carry it up and load it so nothing leaks on your driveway. A full lower level is often a half to three-quarter load, $400 to $600. Two flights, one turn at the landing.

Furniture Removal

Halls has plenty of solid old furniture: cedar chests, oak hutches, iron beds, the 1970s console stereo. Solid wood in decent shape gets a second life at the Knoxville Habitat for Humanity ReStore or at KARM Stores, which has around 18 stores in the area. Particle-board pieces that sagged in a damp basement go to the landfill. We think a dry, sturdy dresser deserves one more house before it's done. If a piece has a family story, tell us, and it gets wrapped in a moving blanket instead of stacked.

Estate Cleanouts for Family Homes

Halls has deep roots. Thomas Hall settled here around 1796, and some families have held the same land since long before the subdivisions went in. When a parent passes or moves into care, the house can hold three generations of belongings. We work room by room with the family, set keepsakes and papers aside, and donate what's worth keeping. Most run $1,000 to $4,000, usually two to four loads. See estate cleanouts for how we plan the days.

Appliance Removal

Old washers and dryers from the laundry room, a chest freezer from the carport, a window AC unit nobody's used in years. Any appliance with refrigerant costs $50 extra so the coolant can be recovered under EPA Section 608 before scrap, and the Halls center won't take those at all. Metal appliances without coolant go to a scrap yard such as SA Recycling Knoxville or Tennessee Metals. Appliance removal has the details.

Mattress Removal

Guest-room mattresses and box springs usually come from an upstairs bedroom with a tight turn on the stairs. Each piece adds $50 for disposal. They're bulky but light, so a queen set barely dents the trailer. Trailer math: one set by itself is a $125 quarter load plus $100 for the two pieces, $225 in all, and the bed frame rides in the same space at no extra cost.

TV and Electronics Pickup

Tube TVs are the item we get asked about most in Halls basements. A tube TV over 19 inches weighs about 73 pounds according to EPA figures, more than twice a flat screen. Knox County sends TVs to the landfill because they cost too much to recycle. Computers, printers and monitors can go to e-waste recycling, and Halls is a Knox County electronics drop-off site. We take both and look for a recycler first. A flat screen that still works is a different story; those can go to a thrift store.

How Much Does Junk Removal Cost in Halls?

Junk removal in Halls usually costs $125 to $800 in 2026, depending on how much of our 16-yard trailer your junk fills. A few items start at $125, a musty basement often runs $400 to $600, and a full trailer is $800. Mattresses and fridges add $50 each. Estate cleanouts run $1,000 to $4,000.

Typical Halls jobPriceNotes
Tube TV and an entertainment center$125 (quarter load)Heavy, two-person carry
Damp basement, boxes and furniture$400 to $600Half to three-quarter load
Garage and carport$400 (half load)Metal sorted out for scrap
Whole-house estate cleanout$1,000 to $4,000Usually 2 to 4 loads
Mattress or box spring+$50 eachOn top of the load price
Chest freezer+$50Coolant recovered first

For a yardstick, HomeAdvisor's average Knoxville junk removal job is about $253, and one cleared-out room in Halls tends to land in that neighborhood. Whole houses are a different animal. That's what the estate row in the table is for.

What pushes a Halls price up is usually access, not miles. A basement with one narrow stair, a turn at the landing and a low ceiling takes longer than a garage at street level, and we'll say so when we quote. Wet things weigh more, too, so a soaked basement fills the trailer by weight sooner than a dry one.

Sorting a Halls Family Home Before It Changes Hands

Clearing a home that's been in a Halls family for decades takes more sorting than hauling. Here's where things usually end up, and the county rules that apply to each.

  • Papers and photos: boxed and left for the family, never thrown out without asking. Old tax papers can go to a shredding service.
  • Furniture and housewares: donated when they're dry and sound. KARM offers free pickup on large donations, usually within 1 to 2 days, if you can wait that long.
  • Metal: cast iron tubs, push mowers with the gas drained, water heaters, shelving and grills. The Knox County scrap metal area takes all of these, and so do local scrap yards.
  • Computers and printers: Halls is one of four county centers with a Goodwill-run e-waste area, along with Dutchtown, Karns and John Sevier.
  • Old carpet: Halls offers carpet recycling, which matters. According to EPA numbers, only about 9.2% of carpet and rugs in the US got recycled in 2018.
  • Paint and chemicals: these go to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 1033 Elm Street, free for Knox County households. We can't haul them.

The family sets the pace, never us. Some folks want the house finished in one day so nobody has to drive back. Others want two weekends and time to go through Grandma's sewing room one drawer at a time. Either way works for our crew.

Old Roads and Old Family Land in Halls

Halls takes its name from the crossroads. Emory Road was cleared in 1785 as a route to Nashville, and it crosses Maynardville Pike right in the middle of town. Around 1860, Pulaski Hall ran a store, an inn and a blacksmith shop at that corner, and Halls High School opened in 1916. So some land here has been in one family for a long time, and the old sheds and outbuildings show it.

Today Halls is a census-designated place of 10,341 people (2020) across two ZIP codes, 37918 and 37938. It isn't a city, so there's no city bulky pickup. Knox County sends residents to private haulers for weekly trash and to the county centers for the rest. Older houses sit beside subdivisions built on the slopes between Black Oak Ridge and Beaver Ridge, and split-levels on those slopes mean stairs on almost every job.

Fountain City sits just south, Powell to the west, and Corryton and Maynardville farther out, so our trucks cross Halls on a lot of north Knox County runs. That's handy for you. When a truck is already up that way, a same-day pickup is much easier to squeeze in. We come up I-275 and I-75 or straight up Maynardville Pike, depending on the hour, and we steer clear of the crossroads when school lets out.

About 81,297 people live within five miles of the crossroads, with a median household income near $70,872 by recent census estimates. That's a lot of households in a short drive, and in any given month plenty of them are moving, downsizing or settling an estate. It's one reason our north Knox County trucks route through Halls so often.

Every time we clear an old Halls outbuilding, something turns up worth keeping: a cast iron tub, a wooden hand plane, a shoebox of letters. We set those aside and ask before anything goes on the trailer. We also haul southwest of town, so if family down that way needs a hand, see junk removal in Lenoir City.

You've Got Questions

Halls Junk Removal FAQs

Can you donate my furniture instead of dumping it?

Yes. Furniture, kitchen items and tools in good shape go to KARM, the Habitat for Humanity ReStore or Goodwill before anything goes to the landfill. Halls residents can also drop good items at the attended donation area at the Halls Convenience Center on Neal Drive. If you'd rather not load it, we make that donation stop for you.

Do you cover both Halls ZIP codes, 37918 and 37938?

Yes. We pick up junk all over Halls Crossroads, in both 37918 and 37938, plus Fountain City, Corryton and Powell nearby. Pickups run Monday to Saturday, 6am to 10pm. Halls is about 9 or 10 miles from downtown Knoxville, so same-day pickups are often possible when the schedule allows.

What do I do with an old tube TV in Halls?

You have two choices. Knox County takes TVs at convenience centers like Halls but puts them in the trash, because they cost too much to recycle. Or we pick it up, carry it out and look for a recycler first. A large tube TV weighs about 73 pounds, so most people pick the pickup.

Will you clean out a basement that has mildew?

Yes, for the junk side of the job. We bag wet boxes, carry out swollen furniture and pull damp carpet, wearing gloves and masks. Heavy mold on the walls or framing needs a mold specialist, and we can clear the contents first so they can get straight to work.
