Mattress Removal and Disposal in Knoxville
Mattresses are awkward more than heavy. A king pillow-top folds in the middle, catches every door frame and slides off a dolly, which is how so many end up stuck on the landing. We carry it out, wrap it in plastic if you ask, and take the frame and headboard with it. Knoxville Elite Hauling provides mattress and box spring disposal to Knoxville and surrounding Tennessee cities, including Farragut, Maryville, Powell, Halls Crossroads, Karns and Seymour.
For mattress removal, Knoxville calls usually come the same week a new mattress shows up. If the whole bedroom is going, add the dresser and nightstands with furniture removal; if it's a whole house, that's an estate cleanout. We haul a lot of bunk bed mattresses out of family homes in Halls Crossroads and worn-out cabin rental mattresses in Seymour.
When to Call for Mattress Removal
A twin mattress you can drag to the curb yourself. Call us when:
- A new mattress is coming: delivery is Thursday and the old set is still on the frame.
- It's upstairs: a queen set coming down two flights with a turn at the landing is a two-person carry.
- The county wall is in the way: Knox County Convenience Centers take mattresses and box springs free inside the one load per day limit, but self-service unloading means you lift them over a 4-foot wall yourself.
- The city's weekly cap is full: the City of Knoxville bulky waste pickup caps you at 5 items a week (you book it through 311), and a mattress, box spring and frame already use three.
Each mattress or box spring is $50 on top of the load. Trailer math: a queen set takes up about a tenth of the trailer, so on its own it rides in our smallest $125 quarter load, $225 total. HomeAdvisor's single item prices list mattress pickup at $75 to $150 nationally. Added to a bigger load, ours is just $50 a piece.

Types of Mattress Removal We Handle
Anything you sleep on, we'll carry out. These are the four we see most.
Mattress Disposal
Mattress disposal covers every size from twin to California king, plus pillow-tops, memory foam and hybrids. Memory foam is heavier than it looks and floppy, so we fold and strap it before the stairs. Clean mattresses ride as they are. If yours spent years in a damp basement or had a pet accident, we bag it in plastic so nothing rubs your walls on the way out. Honestly, the bag is for your hallway, not for us.
Box Spring Removal
Box spring removal is usually easier than the mattress. A box spring is a wood frame with steel coils or a metal grid inside, so it's stiff and carries flat. It's still $50, since disposal costs the same. Split box springs for king beds count as two pieces. We've seen plenty of queen box springs that won't make a tight stair turn, and then we can cut the frame on site with your okay.
Bed Frames, Headboards and Adjustable Bases
Metal bed frames, rails, headboards and footboards ride along with the mattress at no extra charge when they fit in the same load. Adjustable bases are the heavy ones (motors plus a steel frame), so mention them when you call. They come apart at the base and go to scrap with the other metal. Wooden headboards in good shape can go to the ReStore.
Futons, Crib and Daybed Mattresses
Futon pads, crib mattresses, daybed and trundle mattresses all count as mattresses, at $50 each. A futon frame is usually metal or pine and rides free with the pad. Bunk beds come apart with a hex key we already carry. The whole kid's room can go in one trip, posters and all.
Mattress Removal Cost in Knoxville
These are typical 2026 prices for Knoxville. The $50 per piece covers disposal, and the load price covers the trailer, the crew and the carry.
| Mattress job | Typical 2026 price | What changes it |
|---|---|---|
| One mattress on its own | $175 ($125 quarter load + $50) | Stairs, size, other items added |
| Mattress and box spring set | $225 ($125 + $50 + $50) | Bed frame and headboard ride free in the same space |
| Mattress added to a bigger junk load | +$50 per piece | Nothing else changes |
| Two full bed sets from a move-out | $325 ($125 + four pieces at $50) | Frames, nightstands, more space |
What About Mattress Recycling in Knoxville?
Mattress recycling isn't really an option in Knoxville yet. Tennessee has no state mattress recycling program, and we haven't found a local recycler that takes them, so most old mattresses here end up in a landfill. That's a waste, because more than 75% of a mattress (the steel, foam, fiber and wood) can be recycled.
The numbers are big. The Mattress Recycling Council counts at least 15 million mattresses thrown out in the US every year, about 50,000 a day. Where recycling programs exist, the foam and fiber become carpet padding, the springs get melted down as scrap steel, and box spring wood is chipped into mulch.
So we do the part we can. Metal frames and adjustable bases go to the Knox County scrap metal area or a scrap yard, clean wooden headboards go to the Knoxville Habitat for Humanity ReStore, and only the mattress and box spring go to the City of Knoxville Transfer Station, where the Transfer Station tipping fee is $70 a ton. Keep, give, scrap, toss. Mattresses, sadly, are mostly toss.

Mattress Removal FAQs
How Much Does Mattress Removal Cost in Knoxville?
Mattress removal in Knoxville costs $175 with us for a single mattress and $225 for a mattress and box spring set: our $125 quarter trailer load plus $50 per piece. Added to a bigger junk pickup, each mattress or box spring is just $50 more. HomeAdvisor lists mattress pickup at $75 to $150 nationally, before any carry from upstairs.
Can I Put a Mattress Out for City Bulky Pickup?
Yes, if you live inside the City of Knoxville. Call 311 to set up a bulky pickup, and the city takes up to 5 bulky items a week from the curb, so a mattress, box spring and frame use three of your five. You carry everything to the curb yourself, and it may sit there until pickup day.
Do Donation Stores Take Used Mattresses?
Rarely. In our experience, Knoxville thrift and donation stores turn down used mattresses, even clean ones, so we don't count on it. A mattress that's never been slept on, still in its plastic, is the exception worth a phone call to KARM or Goodwill. Bed frames and wooden headboards in good shape donate much more easily.
Knoxville Neighbors Say We Show Up, Say the Price and Sweep Up
Most of our work comes from homeowners, real estate agents and property managers who have used us before. A few of them sent us a note afterwards.
