What Karns Homeowners Ask Us to Haul
Karns is about 11 miles northwest of downtown Knoxville, with Oak Ridge Highway (TN-62) running through it and Pellissippi Parkway a few minutes west. It sits in the Beaver Creek valley between Beaver Ridge and Copper Ridge, around 960 to 1,000 feet up, next to Ball Camp, Hardin Valley and Solway. Outside junk is a big share of our Karns work. Brush piles, rusted swing sets and old fence sections show up on a lot of quotes, right beside the garage fridge.
- Brush, limbs and old fencing that no county center will take (yard waste removal)
- Garage fridges and deep freezers, coolant handled the right way (appliance removal)
- Back-deck hot tubs that sat through one winter too many
- Two-car garages in the subdivisions off Oak Ridge Highway
- Kitchen remodel leftovers: old cabinets, countertops and flooring
Brush and Limbs in Karns: Where Yard Waste Can Go
This rule catches a lot of Karns homeowners: none of the Knox County Convenience Centers take greenwaste. No limbs, logs, brush, stumps or leaves at the Karns Convenience Center on Karns Crossing Lane, even though it takes almost everything else. Brush has to go to a private greenwaste yard such as Living Earth West on Joe Daniels Road, and you load and unload it yourself.
Karns is unincorporated county, so there's no city brush truck coming by either. For a few bags of leaves, the drive is fine. For a fallen limb's worth of branches plus the fence it landed on, put it all on one trailer, priced by space like anything else. A quarter load of brush is $125. We cut long limbs down on site, and we'd rather do that than have you on a ladder with a chainsaw.
Types of Junk Removal We Offer in Karns
A Karns job is as likely to start in the backyard as in the den. Here's what we haul there most, yard first.
Yard Waste Removal
Brush piles, fallen limbs, rotted railroad ties, old garden edging and bags of leaves. Because the county centers refuse all greenwaste, yard debris is one of our most common Karns calls. We stack limbs flat and tight so the trailer holds more, which keeps your price down. Brush is light for its size, so a big pile often costs less than people expect. Packed right, it's like loading a church van for a youth trip: heavy stuff low and forward, soft stuff in the gaps, nothing loose on top.
Appliance Removal
Garage fridges, deep freezers and dehumidifiers turn up in a lot of Karns garages and basements. The Karns center refuses anything with refrigerant, and the EPA safe disposal rule makes the scrap yard at the end of the line confirm the coolant was recovered. A "Freon removed" sticker doesn't count as proof. We handle that part for $50 per unit on top of the load. Washers and dryers carry no extra fee. Please empty the food out of a freezer first, since we can't haul one that's still full.
Furniture Removal
Couches, recliners, dining sets, bunk beds, and the desk the last owner left in the bonus room. If you'd like to drop good pieces at the Karns center's donation area yourself, go for it. Otherwise we take them to KARM Stores or the ReStore, and the rest rides to the transfer station. A couch and a loveseat usually fit in a $125 quarter load. Honestly, that's our most common Saturday-morning job in Karns. Gone in an hour.
Hot Tub Removal
Back-deck hot tubs wear out after enough winters, and an empty eight-person tub weighs 1,200 to 1,800 pounds. After an electrician disconnects the power, we drain it, cut the shell into sections and carry the pieces to the trailer. If the path is wide and flat, a hydraulic dolly and spa sled can roll it out whole instead. Most cost $300 to $600. Hot tub removal explains every step.
Construction Debris Removal
Kitchen and bath remodels in Karns leave old cabinets, countertops, flooring and drywall. The county centers take some DIY demolition debris, but lumber and decking have to be cut to 5 feet or less, and shingles and concrete aren't accepted at all. We load it the way it comes out. Tile and stone fill the trailer by weight, so we look before we quote. See construction debris removal for remodel cleanup.
Mattress Removal
A mattress or box spring adds $50 each to the load. We carry them down from upstairs bedrooms, so nobody wrestles a king mattress down a staircase. At the county center it counts toward your one-load limit and goes over a wall by hand. We'd rather do that part for you. Bunk bed mattresses from kids' rooms are the ones we see most in Karns, usually with the frame. A twin set takes so little room that it rides along with a furniture load at the $125 quarter rate, plus the $50 fee per piece.
How Much Does Junk Removal Cost in Karns?
Junk removal in Karns usually costs $125 to $800 in 2026, based on how much of our 16-yard trailer the load fills. A brush pile or a couple of big items is often a $125 quarter load, a garage about $400, and a full trailer $800. Fridges and mattresses add $50 each, and hot tubs run $300 to $600.
| Typical Karns job | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Brush pile from a downed limb | $125 to $400 | Quarter to half load |
| Couch and loveseat | $125 | Quarter load |
| Two-car garage cleanout | $400 to $600 | Half to three-quarter load |
| Hot tub off a back deck | $300 to $600 | Size and access |
| Kitchen remodel debris | $400 to $800 | Weight of tile and counters |
| Fridge or freezer | +$50 each | Coolant recovered first |
Trailer math: a full 16-yard load is about what six or seven pickup beds hold. At the county center's one-pickup-a-day limit, that's more than a week of trips for one household, and the center is closed Wednesdays and Sundays.
Two things change a Karns price more than anything else: weight and the walk. Brush and furniture are light for their size, so they're priced by space. Tile, stone and wet yard debris fill the trailer by weight first. And a backyard hot tub down a slope with no gate takes longer than one beside the driveway. We look at both before we say a number.
Tires, Paint and Gas Cans: Karns Garage Odds and Ends
A lot of Karns garages have the same back corner: a stack of old tires, half-full paint cans and a gas can or two. Each of those has its own Knox County rule, so here's how they work.
- Tires: the Karns center takes up to 8 passenger or light-truck tires per resident per year. Between 8 and 20 needs the county's okay ahead of time, and bigger piles go to Liberty Tire Recycling on Transport Lane. You already paid for that recycling: the Tennessee tire pre-disposal fee adds $1.35 to every new tire sold.
- Latex paint: the latex paint rule is simple. Let it dry out solid in the can, and then it can go in household trash.
- Oil-based paint, solvents and chemicals: these go to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 1033 Elm Street, free for Knox County households, up to 100 pounds a day. We can't haul them.
- Mowers and tillers: fuel out first. Push mowers with the gas drained count as scrap metal at the county centers, and they ride on our trailer the same way.
- Propane tanks: the centers allow one per resident per year. We don't haul them, so plan that drop-off on your own.
We'll take old tires along with the rest of a Karns load. Average tire weight for a passenger tire is about 22.5 pounds, so a set of four is about 90 pounds, and we'll tell you what they add when we look at the pile.
Karns, Beaver Ridge and Melton Hill Lake
Karns used to be called Beaver Ridge. It was renamed in the 1950s for Thomas Conner Karns, Knox County's first schools superintendent. The census line for the Karns CDP is small, with 3,536 people in 2020 and about 4,115 in the latest estimate, but the area people call Karns reaches well past it toward Ball Camp and Hardin Valley.
The median household income is about $100,043 and the median home value about $328,600, across roughly 1,519 homes inside the census line. In our experience, Karns houses come with garages, decks and backyard sheds, so our jobs here tend to mix indoor and outdoor junk on the same trailer.
The Karns Convenience Center sits on Karns Crossing Lane, about half a mile east of the Ingles. It's open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 to 6 and Saturday from 7 to 3. It's one of the better-equipped county sites, with a donation drop-off, electronics recycling and carpet recycling in one spot. For a carload of sorted, giveable stuff, it's a good trip, and we tell people so. A whole garage is a different job.
Hardin Valley and Ball Camp sit right next door, and a Karns run often picks up a job in each on the same trip. Beaver Creek flows through the valley toward the Clinch River, and some lower lots stay damp after a wet spring. That's when we see the most soggy garage boxes and rotted lawn furniture.
Melton Hill Lake, formed when the dam on the Clinch River closed in 1963, touches Knox County just to the west. Homes on that side add dock boxes, sun-faded patio sets and broken coolers to the list. We take all of it. Gas cans and propane tanks have to be emptied first.
Most of our Karns driving is on Oak Ridge Highway, and mid-morning is when it moves best. Powell is a short hop east through the same valley. Our owner grew up there, so we cover junk removal in Powell just as often.

Karns Junk Removal FAQs
Does the Karns Convenience Center take brush or yard waste?
No. The Karns Convenience Center on Karns Crossing Lane, like every Knox County center, takes no limbs, logs, brush, stumps or leaves. Yard waste goes to a private greenwaste yard such as Living Earth West on Joe Daniels Road, or a hauler loads it for you. We price brush by trailer space.
Can I donate furniture at the Karns center?
Yes. The Karns Convenience Center is one of three Knox County centers with an attended donation area for clothing, furniture, kitchen items and tools in good shape, and it recycles electronics too. It's free for Knox County residents. If a piece is too heavy to load yourself, we'll take it to KARM or the ReStore.
How soon can you pick up junk in Karns?
Often the same day when the schedule allows, and otherwise the next day. Karns is about 11 miles northwest of downtown Knoxville on Oak Ridge Highway, and we run Monday to Saturday from 6am to 10pm. Send a couple of photos and your street, and we'll give you a price range right away.
What is the smallest junk pickup you do in Karns?
Our smallest load is a quarter of the 16-yard trailer for $125, which covers a few big items like a couch, a recliner and a bed frame. Mattresses and refrigerant appliances add $50 each on top. Karns sits inside our regular Knox County service area, so it's priced like any Knoxville pickup.
