Appliance Removal in Knoxville, TN

Knoxville Elite Hauling & Junk Removal handles appliance removal in Knoxville, from the basement chest freezer to the 25-year-old washer in the laundry closet. Most single appliances fit our $125 quarter load. A fridge, freezer or window AC adds $50, because the coolant has to come out properly before it's scrapped. Total first, lifting second.

Appliance Removal and Recycling in Knoxville

An old fridge is about 250 pounds of steel, plastic and coolant, and it's the one appliance no free drop-off in Knox County will touch. We carry it out, along with washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers and water heaters, from kitchens, basements and garages, then split the load between scrap, recycling and donation. Knoxville Elite Hauling provides refrigerator, washer and dryer pickup and appliance recycling to Knoxville and surrounding Tennessee cities, including Farragut, Maryville, Powell, Halls Crossroads, Karns, Alcoa and Seymour.

For appliance removal, Knoxville kitchen remodels bring in a lot of our calls: the new fridge shows up, and the old fridge, the range and the dishwasher all need to leave the same day. If the cabinets and countertops are coming out too, that's construction debris removal. A worn-out sofa can ride in the same trailer with our furniture removal. We pull a lot of basement freezers out of split-levels in Maryville and ranch houses in Karns.

When to Call for Appliance Removal

Washers and dryers are free to drop at the county scrap pile if you can get them there. Here's when that stops being practical:

  • It's a fridge or freezer: under the Knox County refrigerant devices ban, convenience centers refuse refrigerators, freezers, AC units, dehumidifiers, ice makers, wine coolers and water coolers.
  • The weight: going by the EPA's appliance weights, a fridge is about 250 pounds and a washer about 150. That's two people, a dolly and straps.
  • The curb won't work: the city's bulky pickup takes a Freon appliance only after certified personnel have drained and tagged it.
  • Gas hookups: a gas dryer or range needs its line shut off and capped by a plumber or your gas utility. After that, it's ours to carry.
  • Basement stairs: a chest freezer that went down before the basement was finished doesn't always want to come back up.

Trailer math: one washer, dryer or stove is a $125 quarter load. A fridge, freezer, window AC or dehumidifier adds $50 each for refrigerant recovery. HomeAdvisor's single item prices put a fridge or major appliance at $60 to $250 nationally.

Types of Appliance Removal We Handle

Here's how each kind of appliance leaves the house, and where it ends up after it does.

Refrigerator Removal

Refrigerator removal starts with the coolant. EPA Section 608 makes it illegal to vent refrigerant into the air, and whoever handles the fridge last (usually the scrap recycler) has to make sure it was recovered first. We take fridges to a recycler that pulls the coolant with proper recovery equipment, and the $50 fee covers that. Empty it and unplug it the night before so the freezer drips into towels instead of onto your floor. Side-by-sides with ice makers get the water line shut off and capped.

Freezer Removal

Freezer removal follows the same coolant rules as a fridge, but the carry is usually worse. Chest freezers live in basements and garages, and the long ones barely clear a stair turn. We stand them on end, strap the lid shut and walk them up one step at a time. One request: finish or toss the last of the frozen casseroles first. A freezer that sat unplugged for a week with food inside is a smell nobody forgets.

Washer and Dryer Removal

Washer and dryer removal is one of our quickest jobs. We shut the water valves, unhook the hoses, drain what's left in the drum into a bucket and unplug the dryer. Both machines go to scrap, and the Transfer Station free scrap policy covers appliances without refrigerant, so your price is just the trailer space. Stacked laundry pairs come apart at the bracket. A gas dryer needs its line capped by a pro before we arrive. Twenty minutes, most days.

Stove, Range and Dishwasher Removal

Electric ranges, wall ovens, cooktops, dishwashers, microwaves and trash compactors all go to scrap metal. The Knox County scrap metal area takes most of them, and so do scrap yards like SA Recycling Knoxville, so we keep them out of the trash pile. We unplug electric stoves and unhook dishwasher supply lines under the sink, with a towel down for the last cup of water. Gas ranges get capped first, same as dryers.

Window AC Units, Dehumidifiers and Water Coolers

These are small, but they're the ones people get stuck with. Window units, portable ACs, dehumidifiers, wine coolers, mini fridges and office water coolers all hold refrigerant, so the county centers turn them away and the city curb won't take them undrained. Each counts as a refrigerant appliance at $50, though they take up almost no trailer space. Last summer we carried six window units out of one Fourth and Gill duplex in a single trip.

Water Heater Removal

Old tank water heaters are mostly steel, so they scrap well. The tank has to be drained and disconnected first, which is the plumber's job when the new heater goes in, and plenty of plumbers leave the old one in the garage or by the driveway. That's where we come in. A 50-gallon tank is a two-person carry even empty. We don't do plumbing or gas work ourselves.

Appliance Removal Cost in Knoxville

These are typical 2026 prices for Knoxville. Trailer space sets the base price, and the refrigerant fee goes on top for anything with coolant in it.

Where Old Appliances Go

Keep, give, scrap, toss. Every appliance we pick up goes into one of those piles, and very little lands in the last one.

  • Give: clean, working appliances go to the Knoxville Habitat for Humanity ReStore or KARM Stores, which both take appliances in good shape.
  • Scrap: washers, dryers, stoves and water heaters go to the scrap yard as steel. The City of Knoxville Transfer Station also takes appliances without refrigerant at no charge.
  • Recover, then scrap: fridges, freezers and ACs go to a recycler that pulls the coolant first. Under the EPA verification statement rule, a fridge that shows up already empty needs a signed statement naming who recovered the refrigerant and when. A sticker doesn't count.
  • Toss: what's left, like cracked plastic drawers and old foam, goes to the transfer station, where the Transfer Station tipping fee is $70 a ton.

According to EPA major appliances data, Americans discarded 5.25 million tons of major appliances in 2018, and about 60% of that was recycled. That's one of the best rates for any household junk, because appliances are mostly steel. We'd like Knoxville's share to be higher still.

More Appliance Recycling Questions

Can You Take an Appliance That Still Works?

Yes, and we'd rather it didn't go to scrap. A clean, working washer, range or fridge can go to the ReStore or KARM, which both accept appliances in good shape. You still pay for the pickup and the trailer space, but you can ask for a donation receipt. A fridge keeps its $50 fee if the store passes on it.

What Does the Freon Removed Sticker Mean?

Less than people think. The EPA says a scrap yard can't accept a sticker as proof the refrigerant is gone. It needs a signed statement with the name and address of whoever recovered it, plus the date. That's why an empty-looking fridge still costs extra to scrap, and why we take ours to a recycler that handles the recovery itself.

Appliance Removal FAQs

How Much Does Refrigerator Removal Cost in Knoxville?

Refrigerator removal in Knoxville costs $175 with us for a single fridge: the $125 quarter trailer load plus a $50 refrigerant fee. If the fridge rides along with a bigger load, it's just that load's price plus $50. HomeAdvisor lists fridge and major appliance pickup at $60 to $250 nationally, so that sits right in the normal range.

Will Knox County Take My Old Refrigerator?

No. Under the Knox County refrigerant devices ban, convenience centers refuse refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, ice makers, wine coolers and water coolers because of federal refrigerant rules. The county sends residents to a scrap yard, the City Transfer Station or a junk removal company instead. Washers, dryers and stoves are still fine at the county scrap metal area.

Is Appliance Recycling Free in Knoxville?

Appliance recycling in Knoxville is free if you haul it yourself and it holds no refrigerant. The Knox County scrap metal area and the City of Knoxville Transfer Station both take washers, dryers, stoves and water heaters at no charge. Fridges and freezers cost money everywhere, because someone has to recover the coolant with proper equipment first.

Do You Disconnect Washers, Dryers and Gas Stoves?

We unplug electric appliances, shut the water valves and unhook washer, dishwasher and ice maker lines ourselves. We don't touch gas. A gas dryer, gas range or gas water heater needs its line shut off and capped by a licensed plumber or your gas utility before we arrive, and then we carry it out like any other appliance.

Do I Have to Empty and Defrost the Fridge First?

Yes, please. Take out the food, any shelves you want to keep and everything in the door bins, then unplug it the night before so the freezer has time to drip. Lay a towel under the front edge. An empty fridge already weighs about 250 pounds, and a full one is heavier and a lot messier on the stairs.
