Junk We Haul Most in Alcoa

Half our Alcoa calls come from the old company houses: small rooms, one narrow hall, a crawl space hatch and a shed out back that's been filling up since the 1970s. The other half come from the newer streets near Pellissippi Parkway, where people are moving in or moving out. Alcoa grew from 8,449 people in 2010 to 10,978 in 2020, and it's about 13 miles from our Knoxville yard by Alcoa Highway. Close enough that a morning call can turn into an afternoon pickup when the schedule has room.

  • Old furniture from small houses with narrow doors, handled with furniture removal
  • Fridges and freezers the city won't take until the coolant is drained, picked up with appliance removal
  • Crawl space and shed junk from older lots: metal shelving, rusted mowers, a 1980s console TV
  • Whole-house estate cleanouts when a family home is sold
  • Remodel debris the city curb pickup refuses, hauled with construction debris removal

Alcoa's Bulky Pickup Weeks (and What Misses the Truck)

Alcoa runs its own curb pickup, and it's a good deal if your stuff fits the rules. Bulky waste goes on the 2nd and 4th weeks of the month, brush on the 1st and 3rd. Don't set bulky items out before the Friday ahead of your week. Brush has to be out by 6:30 a.m., clean untreated wood only, nothing thicker than 8 inches across.

Waiting for the right week is a bit like waiting on a fix-it ticket at the DMV: it happens, just not this week. And some things never make the truck at all. The city won't take contractor debris or big demolition jobs (those need a roll-off), and a fridge only goes out once a certified tech has pulled the Freon. That leftover pile is most of what we haul in Alcoa.

Types of Junk Removal We Offer in Alcoa

Here's what we haul in Alcoa, roughly in the order the calls come in. Every job is priced by how much of our 16-yard trailer it fills, the way you'd buy mulch by the scoop: you pay for the room it takes, not for what it is.

Furniture Removal From Older Alcoa Homes

Couches, recliners, dressers, bunk beds and dining sets are the most common pickups in Alcoa. Older houses have narrow halls and tight doors, so we take legs, backs and drawers off when we need to and pad the door frames before anything big goes through. Pieces in good shape go to the Knoxville Habitat for Humanity ReStore or KARM Stores instead of the landfill.

On a job last spring off Hall Road, the couch only came out of the den after we took the back off and turned it on end at the doorway. Two flights, one turn at the landing. Ten minutes, no scraped paint.

According to the EPA, about 9.68 million tons of furniture went to US landfills in 2018, and only a fraction of a percent was recycled. We think that's a waste. A solid oak dresser can sit in a ReStore by Thursday. A sofa bed with a snapped frame can't, so that one goes to the landfill.

Appliance Removal and Fridge Pickup

Washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers, water heaters and fridges all go. A fridge or freezer costs $50 extra because the coolant has to be recovered under EPA Section 608, the federal rule that bans venting refrigerant into the air. Washers, dryers and stoves have no coolant, so they go straight to scrap metal recycling.

An old fridge weighs about 250 pounds, and a lot of Alcoa kitchens sit up four or five porch steps. Two people, one dolly, straps, doors off if the opening is tight. We won't leave a fridge at the curb with the coolant still in it. Out the door, floor untouched.

Estate Cleanouts for Family Houses

Many Alcoa homes have been in one family for decades. When the house is being sold or rented, we clear it room by room, set aside papers, photos and anything the family flags, and send usable items to donation. An estate cleanout usually costs $1,000 to $4,000 for a whole house, and it often takes two to four trailer loads.

Families who live out of town can leave us a key. We send photos as rooms are cleared and finish with a sweep, so the house is ready for a realtor or a buyer's walkthrough. More on our estate cleanouts.

We've seen a lot of these houses by now, and the pattern is the same: the front rooms are tidy, and the back bedroom, the crawl space and the shed hold sixty years of stuff. Our crew sorts as it lifts. Keep, give, scrap, toss. Four piles, every room.

Construction Debris From Small Remodels

Alcoa's curbside pickup won't take contractor debris, and big demolition jobs need a roll-off dumpster under city rules. For a bathroom or kitchen remodel, we haul drywall, old cabinets, flooring, trim and fixtures in one trip. That works well where a dumpster won't fit in a short driveway.

Concrete and tile weigh a lot more than they look. EPA figures put concrete at about 860 pounds per cubic yard, compared with about 147 pounds for carpet, so heavy debris counts for more of the load. Trailer math: a pulled-up tile floor from one bathroom can weigh more than a whole living room of furniture. See construction debris removal for what we take.

Yard Waste and Brush the City Won't Take

City brush pickup only takes clean, untreated wood under 8 inches across. Thicker limbs, stumps, old fencing and garden timbers need another route, and so does brush mixed with other trash. We cut it, bundle it and load it from the backyard, so nothing sits at the curb waiting for the right week.

The Blount County landfill has refused logs longer than 24 inches since January 2025, so we cut long pieces down before the trip. After a summer storm this is one of our most common Alcoa calls.

Honestly, brush is the job people try to do themselves and regret. A pickup bed holds less than you'd think once the branches spring back up, and a load that isn't tied down can get you a ticket under Tennessee's tarp law. We strap and tarp every load before it leaves your driveway. Tennessee law (T.C.A. § 55-7-109) says loose material in an open bed has to sit at least 4 inches below the walls.

Mattress Removal

Mattresses and box springs are quick jobs. Each one adds $50 to the load price, which covers the disposal fee. The Blount County landfill charges $25 per mattress or box spring on its own, and more than 75% of a mattress can be recycled if it reaches a recycler. Since a mattress set barely dents the trailer, it usually rides along with other things.

Trailer math: a queen mattress and box spring take up about a tenth of the trailer. So if you've got a mattress set and a dresser going, it's still a quarter-load job at $125, plus $100 for the two mattress pieces.

What Does Junk Removal Cost in Alcoa?

Junk removal in Alcoa usually costs $125 to $800 in 2026, based on how much of our 16-yard trailer the load fills. A couple of bulky items cost about $125, half a trailer $400 and a full trailer $800. Mattresses and fridges add $50 each. The price is fixed before loading.

Alcoa jobTypical load2026 price
Couch and recliner from a living roomQuarter trailer$125
Old fridge and chest freezerQuarter trailer plus two refrigerant fees$225
Crawl space and shed cleanoutHalf trailer$400
Kitchen remodel debrisThree-quarter trailer$600
Whole-house estate cleanoutTwo to four full trailers$1,000 to $4,000
Hot tub removal off a patioCut up and hauled$300 to $600

Hauling it yourself has costs too. The Alcoa/Maryville/Blount County Landfill on Long Powers Road in Friendsville charges a $15 minimum for loads up to 500 pounds and $60 a ton for trash and construction debris. It also charges $20 per fridge and $25 per mattress, and it closes at 4:30 p.m. You also need a truck, a helper and a free afternoon. And don't plan on the Knox County convenience centers or the City of Knoxville Transfer Station as a backup: the county sites are for Knox County residents only, and the transfer station charges $70 a ton.

Travis puts it this way: I'd rather you know the full number before you decide. If you've got a truck and a free Saturday, the landfill is a fair option, and we'll say so. If it's a 250-pound fridge and a crawl space, call us.

Old Company Houses and New Subdivisions

Alcoa was built by the Aluminum Company of America. About 150 houses had been started by 1914 and 700 were built by 1920. The company sold the houses to workers in the early 1950s, and many were passed down in families. These houses often have small crawl spaces, detached sheds and decades of stored items.

The city has also grown fast. Its population went up about 30% between 2010 and 2020, and the median home value is now about $277,100. New homes near Pellissippi Parkway mean move-ins, move-outs and leftover packing debris. Moving boxes, foam and old furniture that didn't fit the new place are common pickups.

Alcoa gets about 52 inches of rain a year, so damp basements, musty boxes and wet carpet are common in cleanouts. The Little River runs along the east side of the city toward the Tennessee River. We also serve Louisville, a short drive west on Louisville Road.

Where Alcoa Junk Goes After Pickup

Not everything from an Alcoa job ends up in the same place. Usable furniture, cabinets and working appliances go to donation. Washers, dryers, grills and metal shelving go to scrap. Cardboard from move-ins can go to the Blount County Recycling Center on Levi Street in Maryville, which is free but takes recycling only, not electronics or hazardous waste.

The Blount County landfill only takes waste from Blount County homes and businesses, and it asks for proof of residency or the job's location at check-in. Its recycling drop-off takes electronics, scrap metal and used tires. Paint, solvents and chemicals are things we can't haul, so set those aside before the crew arrives.

Alcoa runs its own sanitation service with curbside recycling, which handles weekly trash well. The junk that piles up is the stuff that doesn't fit a cart: the treadmill in the spare room, the carpet pulled out of the den, the swing set nobody uses, the upright piano in the front room. Piano removal runs $200 to $400 because of the weight. That is the part we take care of.

Most of our Alcoa pickups land on a weekday morning, since we run from 6am to 10pm Monday through Saturday. Early is easier on everyone: cooler crawl spaces, less traffic on Alcoa Highway, and you get your afternoon back. Swept, too.

You've Got Questions

Alcoa Junk Removal FAQs

Should I wait for Alcoa's bulky pickup week or hire a hauler?

If it is a few pieces of furniture and you can carry them to the curb, the city's bulky pickup on the 2nd and 4th weeks is free. If you have a fridge with coolant, remodel debris, or a whole room of stuff, a hauler is faster. We carry it out from inside.

What does the Blount County landfill charge?

The Alcoa/Maryville/Blount County Landfill charges a $15 minimum for loads of 500 pounds or less, $60 per ton for trash and construction debris, $20 per refrigerated appliance and $25 per mattress or box spring. It is open Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Can I put an old fridge at the curb in Alcoa?

Only after the Freon has been removed. Alcoa's bulky pickup takes appliances once the refrigerant is drained, which needs proper recovery equipment. We pick up fridges and freezers with the coolant still in them for a $50 fee and make sure it is handled under EPA rules.

Where can Alcoa residents recycle for free?

The Blount County Recycling Center at 331 Levi Street in Maryville is free and open to Alcoa residents for recycling. It does not take electronics or hazardous waste. The landfill's recycling drop-off takes electronics, scrap metal and used tires.
